Contemporary Maori Art |
Contemporary Mäori art is a visual balance between Mäori and Western influences and a continuum of tradition. For traditionalists Mäori art is recognised through media (whakairo, tukutuku and taaniko, raranga) or designs that indicate tribal affiliations, or subject matter that relates to Mäori. This selection of contemporary Mäori art is influenced by a sense of place, and artists construct a world-view by competing and contributing in a non-Maori global culture. |

Golden - Celebrating 50 Years of the Friends of the Gallery |
For five decades the Friends of the Gallery, have gifted works of art to the City's collection. While the exhibition Golden (26 June - 24 October 2004) gathers together some key highlights, this web tour allows us to bring together all of the gifts. It demonstrates that the Friends' collection includes many icons of New Zealand art and also key works in the Gallery's international collection. |

Portraits of Maori |
The selected works from the Gallery's historic collection provide commentaries on Maori life and culture, indigenous portraiture, and colonial settlement. Early New Zealand artists mapped the 19th and early 20th century with representations of conflict, interventions and cross pollination between Maori and New Zealand's Pakeha settlers, thereby providing a visual backdrop to the social and political issues of the day. |
