De Wet uses the rocky promontory of the landscape as a theatrical backdrop against which Gideon witnesses a miracle. The angel is shown striking the unleavened cakes that Gideon had just made, causing fire to rise up and destroy them. The angel then disappeared, leaving Gideon more certain of the Lord's protection in the wilderness.
